I was in the book checkout line at the Main Library in Akron the other day. A woman in front of me was trying to get library cards for her children. She had no ID or proof of address so she could not get the cards. She said she would just use her library card instead, but didn’t have her library card or a photo ID with her, so of course she couldn’t check anything out. She got very upset, and then got really rude to the clerk. She used the “f” word, he told her not to come back, and she started yelling not nice things across the room as she stormed out. I thought, “Really? You’re upset because the library won’t let you check books or movies or whatever out when they have no proof or record of who you are and there’s no way to ever get the items back ?” Personally, I think it’s a wonderful privilege that you can borrow items for free from a library. It has certainly made my life richer.
