Tornadoes freak me out

Tornadoes are one of those acts of nature that really unnerve me. They can strike with little notice or during the night when it’s hard to warn people and cut a devastating path of destruction indiscriminately. The news breaking as I write this is of another severe outbreak of torndadoes, one of which destroyed an entire town and another which flattened a junior/senior high school, not to mention all the deaths, injuries and damages it caused. The article on msnbc.com said that for only the second time, the Weather Channel issued a TORCON warning of 10 as multiple tornado-producing super-cells moved across northern Kentucky — meaning forecasters at the channel believed there was a 100 percent chance of a tornado within 50 miles. Uh, okay. Our area already had a tornado watch two days ago. A tornado watch … in February?? I was so jittery the other day I looked up the statistics of being killed by a tornado in your lifetime. I read one in 60,000. I’d feel better if it were like one in 100 million. (BTW my wariness of natural disasters is why I could never live on the coast (hurricanes) or in earthquake-prone areas like California.)
