As I skip around Season 2 of Mary Tyler Moore, it’s interesting to see how often Mr. Grant was drinking alcohol in his office. Like, in almost every episode. It makes me wonder how common that was, or still is. I have had a boss who kept liquor in his desk drawer, so I know the practice is not totally obsolete, though it does seem very “old school”. One other interesting thing I noticed is how Mary was the only staff member to call him Mr. Grant — everyone else called him “Lou”. Even Mary’s friend Rhoda called him “Lou”, which made him wince every time she said it. I remember back in the early days having to call some of my bosses “Mr.” while other people called them by their first names. I wonder how many professionals still insist on being called “Mr.” nowadays by their peers or subordinates.
