999

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Can you believe this is my 999th published post??? As my husband said last night, “You sure write a lot”, and to which I responded, “Well, I have a lot to say!!” So thanks for listening to me since my first posts on January 7, 2009. Thanks to everyone who’s been with me since the beginning, and welcome to the newcomers. My blog is a mix of trip ideas, movie reviews, recipes, random thoughts and the occasional vent with comments from readers that run from supportive to, well, expressing opposing viewpoints. The early blogs still have a lot of good information, so please go back in time now and again to see what was going on then. Or browse by category to see a topic you are interested in, like “Things to do – Akron”. Anyway, thanks again for listening. I guess this would be a good time to say goodbye …

Or not! Just kidding! I have too much to say to stop now!!!

Not proud of this “honor”

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

I read yesterday on Wikipedia’s Akron Web page that Summit County is considered the “meth capital of Ohio”. Worse, supposedly it ranks third in the nation of registered meth sites. I never heard of this, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were true. Yuk! (See, I don’t only write the good things about the Akron. Just most of the time!)

The Wilds get wilder

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

I’ve never been to The Wilds outdoor animal park, but my sister-in-law spent her wedding night last year in a zurt on the grounds, so it must be pretty special. Anyway, this year they added a zipline tour. The only other zipline tour in the state is in Hocking Hills. My husband and I did that one a few years ago. I wasn’t nuts about the experience so I don’t plan on trying out the Wilds tour. What I would try is their horseback riding, which they also added this year. The safari tours are pricey, but you’re supposed to get a 50% discount with your local zoo membership (I’m not sure which tours they apply to). My sister-in-law is planning to do either the horseback riding or zipline tour next month as a birthday present for her husband, so I’ll pass along her experience.

A local adventure I’d like to try …

One of these kayaking or canoeing trips along the Cuyahoga River, based in Kent and run through Kent State University. http://www.kent.edu/crookedriver/paddling.cfm Maybe my husband and I can do this on a date before the summer’s out?

How many Web site windows do you have open right now?

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

My husband goes nuts because I generally have 30 windows open at any given time. My 20-year-old niece says her head hurts if she has more than 2 open at a time. I just want information on a lot of things to be a click away. Is that so wrong??

Another reason to visit the CBG

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

The Cleveland Botanical Gardens is one of my very favorite places to visit in the area. And this summer, they’ve added to their appeal with a collection of 24 funky birdhouses placed throughout the gorgeous grounds. The kids and I were there today but only saw a couple of them because the kids spent all their time in the Children’s Garden. I swear that is a such a magical place I half expect to see little fairies flying around. I love it love it love it.

“Midnight in Paris” brings magic of Paris to the big screen

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

My husband and I drove up to Chagrin Falls the other night to see “Midnight in Paris” as it was no longer in the Akron area. I’m so glad we saw it on the big screen before it disappeared! If you haven’t heard of it, I hate to say it’s a Woody Allen movie, because that will immediately turn off most people. But he himself is not in it, so don’t worry. But some of Allen’s old magic is – in the casting, the storyline and the dialogue. Basically, while in Paris, the character played by Owen Wilson travels back in time to the 1920s every night at midnight. He meets people like Picasso, Hemingway and many now-legendary writers and artists who help get him on the right track. The way these characters are portrayed is so fun, especially when the actor is unrecognizable so for a while you could actually believe he or she was that person (a glaring exception was Kathy Bates as Gertrude Stein — it felt like Kathy Bates was with Picasso and how could Kathy Bates have Picasso over?). But what surprised me the most was how much my husband liked it. He really, really liked it. I’d see it again just to get lost in Paris for an hour and a half.

Akron-origin musicians: in my iTunes library or not?

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Yes: Joseph Arthur (Even Tho, In the Sun (covered by Michael Stipe and others for a Hurricane Katrina relief effort), The Pretenders (a bunch of songs), The Strange Familiar (Courage is …) and Waitresses (Christmas Wrapping – later covered by the Spice Girls. Did you know they also did the theme song for the show Square Pegs from the early ’80s starrring Sarah Jessica Parker and the song “I know what boys like”?). No: Devo, Rachel Sweet, James Ingram and (surprise!) The Black Keys. And you thought Akron only bred only sports legends!

Boorishness at the movies

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

My husband and I went to see a movie Friday night at the bargain show in North Canton. Because we were seeing the popular movie “Bridesmaids”, the show was so crowded that the ushers were asking people who had an empty seat next to them to move down to make room for groups of two or more. My husband and I moved immediately. However, the couple behind us complained and almost refused to do it. Seriously? They’re arguing with the usher and saying “What if we move and then no one uses those seats. We’ll have moved for NOTHING!!!”. They did move, noisily and unhappily, and a couple did end up sitting next to them. I was just shocked by their sense of entitlement to take as much room as they wanted. I guess if they wanted to make sure the seats next to them remained empty they should have bought extra tickets.

Being judgmental is …

… a bad character trait of mine. And I especially shouldn’t judge people, like celebrities, who I only know from online stories. But I just wonder how someone like Denise Richards got approved to adopt a baby. Adoptive parents are (or at least should be!) screened rigorously. Does she really seem like someone who is a good candidate, especially if whackos like Charlie Sheen might be around the child?
