I’m now a store window painter!

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

You can learn something new every day, and I’ve recently learned how to paint store windows! I’m having a blast! I’m doing the windows of the new RadAir complete car center in the Valley, across from Papa Joe’s. It’s not finished yet, and I’ll post a picure when I’m all done, but if you’re in the area, check it out! It’s nothing fancy – a big car, tire tracks, words, road signs – but it offers a freedom I don’t find painting on a canvas. I think it’s the fact I can just rub off my work and start again – if only it were that easy to correct mistakes in other areas of life!

UPDATE: This is what the windows looked like when they were done. They were like this for most of the summer, then last week I drove by and saw the store (but not garage) windows have been cleaned off. Good thing I wasn’t too attached to it!

Waterworks: great place to take beginning bike riders

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Two of my children have recently begun riding their bikes without training wheels, so I’ve been thinking of places to take them. The Towpath is nice and relatively flat but SO crowded on the weekends; I don’t think the kids are ready for that yet. So the other day we went to Waterworks. We started off by taking the paved Kelsey Trail. We went both directions until we hit steep hills then turned back. Then we rode some of the official “bike trail” which (I think) goes around the park (it’s marked on the side of the road). This whole route took us about 45 minutes with just a few stops for water. The kids loved it and wanted to keep going, but we didn’t want to push our luck! All in all, I thought it was a great place for the kids to practice their skills on a paved, scenic, relatively uncrowded route.

Memorial Day

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Just wanted to thank all those who have served, and continue to serve, in the Armed Forces. Whatever you think of the U.S.’s positions in conflicts around the globe, you have to give credit to all those who, whether by choice or not, have served our country, risking their lives and forever changing not only their lives, but also the lives of their friends, families and others. The John Cusack movie “Grace is Gone” does an excellent job of showing the impact of a soldier’s life (and death) on her family. It’s a poignant, touching movie that is not easy to watch but I’m glad I did.

Great places to take people in Akron

blossom2

If you’ve got family or friends coming to visit you this summer, here are some ideas of things to do. Sorry I’m too tired to add the links now; but many can be found on the “Akron-area favorites” page on my Web site:
… Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (train rides, several options)
… Art galleries (Akron Art Museum, Don Drumm, Summit Artspace)
… Cuyahoga Valley National Park (Towpath) – walk or ride bikes (you can rent them in Peninsula)
… Waterworks Park (small waterpark in Cuyahoga Falls)
… Cuyahoga River Cruises (pontoon boat rides run through the City of Cuyahoga Falls)
… Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens (tour the house or just the gardens and grounds, great place to pack a picnic)
… Akron Aeros baseball game (I haven’t been there in several years, but it’s very family-friendly)
… Sarah’s Vineyard and Winery (across from Blossom)
… Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center
… Tons of special events, like the Hardesty Park Arts Expo, free ballet and music performances at parks around the city …
P.S. Even if you don’t have company coming, you should check some of these things out if you haven’t already. It really can be fun to play “tourist” in your own town.

Eating “al fresco” in Akron

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

I love love love to eat outside when weather permits, and these are my favorite places in the Akron area to eat al fresco. And nothing against the Akron area, which I love, but when you’re eating outdoors at these places, you kind of feel like you’re on vacation:
Vegiterranean: Chrissy Hynde’s vegan restaurant in Akron. My sister-in-law, daughter and I went there for lunch one gorgeous day last September and although the food is a bit pricey for us, sitting out on the patio was a slice of heaven.
Fisher’s Cafe and Pub: Peninsula. I love it. Winking Lizard across the street also has outdoor dining but it doesn’t have the same appeal to me as Fisher’s.
Sarah’s Vineyard and Winery: Cuyahoga Falls.
Also, the parks in the area, if you want to pack your own picnic. I like Oxbow, off Cuyahoga Street. Just a little ways off the parking lot and you can picnic at tables right by the river. The kids like when we have “PPP” picnics, packing all kinds of “P” foods (pizza, pretzels, potato chips, pink lemonade, peanuts, peaches, purple grapes, etc.).
I’ll add more as I think of them; in the meantime, bon appetit!

An easy and fun way to learn sign language

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

I highly, highly, highly recommend the Signing Time series of DVDs to learn sign language. I bought my first DVD about three years ago, and was quickly hooked. Each volume in the original series dealt with a certain topic (“my day”, “my neighborhood”, “time to eat” etc.). The DVDs are designed for kids age 7 and under, but really, they’re fun for people of all ages. Our family learned so many signs so quickly it was amazing. Will the DVDs teach you to converse in sign fluently? No, but you will be surprised how helpful learning different signs (like “potty”) can be. It is also very helpful for babies who can’t talk yet. Our youngest used about 50-75 signs correctly before she was even 2. The woman who co-created the series is a story in herself - a truly amazing, caring and talented mom of two children with special needs. In the past several years a ton of new products have become available, including a series just for babies. I have lent the DVDs to friends but won’t give them up yet – they are definitely a resource I intend to go back to from time to time.
